Tedford Housing’s mission is to empower people to move from homelessness to home.

Tedford Housing exists as it does today because neighbors looked out for one another—and continue to do so.

Founded in 1987 by the Brunswick Area Interfaith Council (BAIC), Tedford Housing opened its first emergency shelter for adults experiencing homelessness in the region. Named after the individual who generously donated the original shelter building on Pleasant Street in Brunswick, Tedford was built on the belief that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and a place to land during hard times.

As our community’s needs have changed, Tedford has grown alongside our neighbors. In 1998, we opened a family shelter so parents and children could stay together during times of housing crisis. In the early 2000s, we expanded to offer homelessness prevention and outreach services—helping individuals and families stabilize their housing before a temporary setback becomes an emergency. Over time, we’ve also added 37 units of permanent supportive housing for individuals and families who have experienced homelessness and need continued long-term support.

At the heart of all Tedford Housing programs is case management. We believe lasting stability starts with relationships. Every person we serve is offered individualized support rooted in listening, trust, and respect—connecting them with healthcare, benefits, housing resources, and community services in ways that reflect their goals, strengths, and circumstances.

In December 2025, after a multi-year capital campaign, we moved into a new, expanded emergency shelter at 65 Thomas Point Road. This space increases our shelter capacity by 60% and brings all of our programs under one roof, making it easier for neighbors to access comprehensive support. With separate wings for adults and families, private areas for meetings, and a design centered on safety and dignity, the building reflects our commitment to creating environments where people feel respected and supported.

Today, Tedford Housing serves the midcoast community through emergency shelter, housing, homelessness prevention services, and winter warmth programs. Our mission goes beyond providing a bed for the night. We walk alongside our neighbors through moments of crisis and transition, offering support that stabilizes lives, strengthens families, and helps people move—at their own pace—from homelessness to home.
