A Fresh Start: Brian and His Son’s Journey to Home

For years, Brian lived out of his truck, struggling to get by after a career in home improvement and the Maine lobstering industry. Unable to work due to a disability since 2010, he faced mounting challenges trying to make ends meet on a fixed income. Rising rents, a lack of affordable housing, and increasing costs of living left him unable to provide a stable environment for his family.

Everything changed when Brian’s 15-year-old son came back into his life. Determined to create a safe and stable home, Brian turned to Tedford Housing’s family shelter for help. His persistence paid off when Kami, a case manager, was able to move them into a unit.

At Tedford, Kami worked closely with Brian, providing guidance and support as he navigated the path toward sustainable housing. “Kami was there any time I called her,” Brian shared. “There’s no specific moment where I felt most supported because she was there the whole way through.” Beyond housing, Brian joined virtual parenting classes, connecting with other fathers to share advice and learn how to be the best parent he could be.

In March 2024, Brian and his son moved out of the family shelter and into their new apartment in Lewiston. His son is now thriving as a high school sophomore, and Brian is dreaming about the future, with hopes of one day moving south while keeping Maine close to his heart. Reflecting on his journey, Brian wants others to understand: “No one should be judged by their housing situation. It’s about what we’re working toward.”
